Villages of Karpathos.

The area south of Pigadia. Ammoopi and Afiartis.

If you follow the trail that leads from Pigadia to the airport, which is located at the most southern part of the island, you will get to know the southeastern part of the island. Once you cross the village of Laki, and the beach of Laki, you will reach Ammoopi. Ammoopi with its golden sand and its shallow, crystal clear water disposes of significant tourist infrastructure and is one of teh most important summer resorts of Karpathos.

The area of Afiartis.

Following further the way to the airport you will come across the area of Afiarti.
The name "Afiarti" stems from the mythical giant "Efialtis" (nightmare), and it is mentioned by Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century a.d., as the "Nightmare's End".

Afiartis is the biggest flat area of Karpathos island. It belongs to Menetes, while a big part of it used to belong to Othos village.

Afiartis is of great historical interest due to its strategic position, its fertile soil and its spring waters. Although today most of its land is not cultivated due to rapid tourist development, which has taken place in the last few years, most of the products the Karpathians needed for their survival during the occupation period, were produced in that area.

There are many taverns and hotels along the beaches of Afiartis, from the beach of Damatria to Makri Gialo. Afiartis is ideal for Windsurfing (learning and practising). The annual Speedsurf World Championship is hosted annually in Afiartis.
